The Andean city of Merida lies on a valley table-land at an altitude of 5,397 feet (1,645 m.). A cablelift, the highest in the world, operating in four sections, takes sight-seers from the city of the Pico Espejo glacier (Mirror Peak), at an altitude of 15,330 feet (4,675 m.). To reach this peak, the cable cars ascend over a distance of some eight miles (12.3 km.).

A spectacular view of the Sierra Nevada (Snow-covered Range). The Pico Bolivar (Bolivar Peak), in the background at the left of the picture, rises to 16,423 (5,007 m.), from a series of jagged precipices.
